- What is the weirdest question you have been asked about writing?
My first novel (“Harriet”) was about a female serial killer and I was asked if I had ever killed anyone in real life.
2. What was the most exciting thing about your writing career so far?
Actually, I love the research. History is so much more than names and dates. It’s about people and how they lived their lives. Each new discovery is intriguing and exciting. What we know of the past has been filtered and changed by the storytellers. I am just another storyteller, relating what I have read in my research and then using it in context. I always want to get it right.
3. Do you get your story ideas from real life or real people? If not, where do they come from?
Most of my ideas come from the ‘what ifs’ or ‘whys’ in real history. For example, what would have happened if someone didn’t like the King’s order and decided to rebel? Or why did some of the people risk the trip across the ocean to the colonies in the 1700’s? Or what happened to people caught up in a war? Who were they and who did they love?
In my contemporary novel, I imagined a dark backdrop where a hero and heroine could emerge intact, with many others conspiring against them. That one is based solely on my imagination.
I try to give my characters sufficient flaws to make them ‘real’, but also design the heroes and heroines as people I can relate to and admire. I can live their lives with them as the stories unfold and that is the greatest part of all.
